Back to the South Fork

After a great trip to the South Fork of the Boise about two weeks ago, I decided to give it another go on Thursday.  My Dad decided to make the long day trip from McCall, which put us at the Anderson Reservoir turnoff at about 9:30.

We started the day fishing a slot that held big fish two weeks ago, and they were still there.  My dad rolled two nice fish, and I hooked one, before they stopped eating.  After some good initial action, we worked our way downstream, fishing every nice looking run or hole that was vacant.  The wind picked up mid morning which slowed things down, but the bite turned back on around 3:00.  We ended a day in a run that produced two beauties.  The last fish came to hand while the sun dropped behind the canyon wall...a perfect ending to a great day.  

Salmon River Reconnaissance 03/05/2012

Cody and Scott hit the upper Salmon yesterday, in hopes of finding a few early run steelies.  They caught Bull Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Whitefish, and Cody just maybe, possibly, could have hooked a Steelhead.  It looks like the fish aren't up high in good numbers, but they will be soon.  For now, focus your efforts from Clayton downstream.  Here are a few pictures from the trip.

Fly Tying Classes Coming Soon!

Silver Creek Closed, One Month Left to Fish the Big Wood

As of today, Silver Creek is closed.  It's time to let the big browns and rainbows rest until Memorial Day weekend.  Here's the good news: the Big Wood and the South Fork of the Boise will stay open for the rest of the month, and the Lower Lost remains open all year.  Stock up on your Baetis patterns and give the Lost or SFB a go.  Some of the best winter fishing opportunities are still to come.  Get out there!

 

Steelhead Season is Upon Us!

March is just about here, and that means Stealhead on the upper Salmon.  While the big numbers aren't to Stanley yet, it looks like it's going to be an early run.  We've heard good reports out of Challis, which means if the weather warms up a little bit, the fish should be here in no time.  LRO runs a Steelhead lodge in Stanley and we still have openings.  We also do day trips for these spectacular fish, so give us a call at (208) 726-1706, and we can talk about availability.  If you haven't done a lot of Steelheading, this is a great opportunity to catch your first fish.

 

Good Winter Fishing on the South Fork of the Boise

Zac, Rob, and I drove west yesterday to fish the South Fork of the Boise, and it turned out to be a great day.  The sun was shining, which made for pleasant conditions but no dry fly action.  Midges were flying but very few hit the water.  With nothing happening up top, we got dirty under indicators and picked up some nice fish on nymphs.  We didn't catch any monsters, but the average size was pretty solid.  Here are some shots from the day.

Daydreams

Have you been dreaming about summer nights on the creek?  Me too.  Bob Mallard sent us this picture of a fish he caught on the creek last summer, on a guided trip with Cody.

This caused me  to start looking at other Brown Trout that we caught last summer...man I wish it was June.  I'll be counting down the days to the Brown Drake hatch.  Here are a few shots to remind you of how cold it is outside.
