If you will not be in town over the holidays, it's not too late to call and we will gladly ship a gift for you!
From fly-tying to gift wrapping is a pretty easy switch! All of our store elves take great pride in their gift wrapping skills! You might even notice the little friendly competition between our guys and gals! Of course, gift wrapping is always free and available until we close on Christmas Eve.
We will be closed on Christmas day to enjoy a day with our families and friends, but will re-open on 12/26.
We wish all of our friends and customers a very Merry Christmas!

Good Morning!
We have been blessed with unbelievable snow fall , which equates to awesome skiing and good water storage for next summer's fishing season! And...........it's dumping again!
All of the mountain is open now and skiing is fantastic. If you're on the fence about coming up this holiday season, DON'T! We have the best early season skiing I have seen in years! Even the Lower Bowls opened yesterday, and Mother Nature has provided us with another 8" in the past 24 hrs. There is a winter storm warning though tomorrow morning!
When you are in Sun Valley, don't forget that winter fishing is a whole lot of fun as well. You can easily do both in the same day, ski in the morning and go fishing around noon. Pick slow deep water, anywhere you might sit if you were a fish and tried to preserve energy.
If you have never fished in the winter before, we can help out! Come into the shop for some great advice, we'll even rig your rod for you, or reserve a winter guide trip. Rentals and flies are included in the winter guide trip rate!
If you haven't filled your Christmas list yet, we can help! We have a store full of great gift ideas for the fisherman or non-fisherman alike.
Don't forget that experiences and memories are often better than things! How about a Spring steelhead trip with a stay in our cozy Stanley Steelhead Lodge, a multi-day trip to Yellowstone National Park, a backpacking trip to a high mountain lake, a two-day kids fishing camp, or simply a guide trip on our great local waters? We can help you make your Christmas memorable! Just call us and reserve a trip or purchase a gift certificate!
I better get out there to blow some snow and maybe get on the hill to make some turns!

Good Winter Fishing on the South Fork of the Boise

The South Fork of the Boise is an extremely unique river.  In the summer it draws anglers that are looking to run their drift boats or rafts and throw dries to huge rainbows.  When the flows are shut down to a fraction of the summertime levels, the walk/wade anglers flock to the South Fork to hit all the spots that don't exist in the summer.  It fishes like a completely different river in the winter, but one thing doesn't change: huge rainbows are patrolling every slot and riffle, looking for their next meal.

Yesterday, Sagen and I ran over to the South Fork for our first trip of the winter.  We fished big bugs, hoping to entice one of the rainbows at the very top of the food chain.  We didn't catch a ton of fish, but a few cooperated, including a nice Bull Trout.  I'm never expecting a bull on the end of my line on the that river, so catching that first glimpse of the big char was a treat.  The sun shined yesterday, which brought out midges and even a few BWOs.  There weren't enough bugs to keep fish on the surface, but we did see a few nice heads.  The South Fork should fish well all winter.  Look for a warm day, and you might even get some wintertime dry fly action.

When it's too Cold to Fish

Yes there are times when it's too cold to fish.  Last week the wind combined with the cold to make conditions firmly on the side of miserable.  What happens when the thought of stepping in to the river makes you shiver?  Grab the shotguns and go hunt some waterfowl.  Frank, Cody, and I took off early Sunday morning to go do some jump-shooting.  We spotted birds in a pond we were interested in hunting.  We were too far out to tell what they were, but there were definitely birds on the water.  With hopes of loads of ducks, we snuck up to the edge of the pond, and a sea of geese were hugging the bank right in front of us.  After a momentary pause, due to shock, the birds got up and the shooting began.  We ended up with a couple of limits of geese in just a few seconds.  The highlight of the whole trip was watching Frank's lab, Cash, break ice to retrieve goose after goose.  The birds are headed for the smoker, and we're still talking about those few seconds of chaos.  Here are a couple shots of the aftermath.

Fishing Reports: North, South, and in Between

This Fall, everyone at the shop has spread out and chased fish in all reaches of North America.  Scott and Susanne headed north to cold British Columbia, where they found plenty of fresh Steelhead looking to eat a swung fly.

Cody flew south for a warm, sunny Baja Thanksgiving.  While it wasn't strictly a fishing trip, Cody and his Dad spent one day in a panga with a local guide.  They implemented a technique to catch Dorado, that Cody and I had never tried before.  They floated a dead skipjack outside the boat, which created an oil slick in the water.  They patrolled this slick and waited for cruising Dorado.  Sure enough, the oily water attracted the fish, and they tied into four good Dorado.

With Scott and Susanne up North and Cody down South, I decided to split the difference and make a run to Salmon to look for some local Steel.  I ended up having a great day, landing two fish in three runs.  I was by myself and couldn't get any pictures of the fish, but I got a few shots of the Challis herd of sheep and a beautiful sunset over Galena.  The water has spiked with this recent precipitation, but if things dry off there should be even more fish that have moved up into the system.
